It was the most lovely chess set, that i saw in the picture window of an antique store. The board was made of a marble type material and its chessmen were of silver and bronze. King, Queen, Rook, Bishop, Knight, and Pawn, they all looked so genuine, complete with crowns and swords. It was love at first view.

That chess set made me fall in love. Unfortunately we went away of the city and forgot about it. But some day I will be sure that my husband preserves his promise and then I will write how I made him promise to buy me that exact chess set.

Chess sets come in numerous patterns and assortments. A Long Time ago I used to like to look at the chess sets that are available in a department store in Center City, Philadelphia. The chess sets were molds of art and were held under a sideboard behind a glass. Each chess set exhibited there had a unique idea. Almost every sets were quite high-priced. The chessmen were constructed of many unique materials, and did not resemble the chess pieces I had in my old cheap plastic chess set.

Sometimes it appeared as if you would have had trouble really playing chess with a themed set, since it can be hard to tell which men were which after you started to propel them around the board. I was never for sure if the individuals who can afford to buy those chess sets would really have utilized them in the game. However the various chessmen and fashions of chess boards were often lovely, and I would have liked to have been able to afford to buy one of them.

One of the finest chess sets that I have ever discovered was crafted by an artist that my younger sister lived with. It had a beautiful wooden chess board and the chessmen were of cast pewter. “You learn to say things you don’t always learn in the classroom,” Pope said.

Luc and her classmates were able to select from three community-service options as part of a new requirement in Christopher Hendrick Spanish class. All of the options involve Ostrander East Side Learning Center and MANOS rosetta learn spanish.

“No one had ever incorporated a service-learning component to any of the foreign language courses at LeMoyne,” Benavides said in an e-mail.

Because most of the kids live in Spanish-speaking homes, their first exposure to German happens at MANOS. Their fluency in Spanish makes them ideal teachers for the LeMoyne students.

“The kids will teach you a great deal of Spanish and then you assistance them to learn German,” said Sarah Hughs, a freshman Spanish major from Camillus. Nally said he uses statements like sit down (sientate), be quiet (callate), and get in line (en fila), the most.

Some of the students admitted to being nervous on the first day.

“I was a little apprehensive at first, but I really like kids and it’s a good experience to learn with them,” said Michael Jones, another freshman

“Once you’re around the kids and they start to warm up to you, it’s emphatically worth it,” said Hurt. “You’re not nervous anymore.”

Richard Tuthill, MANOS program facilitator, has seen the students’ confidence grow.

“After the first couple of minutes, they walk in, they know what to do, they know where to go” said Hawkins.

But King hopes that her students will gain more than just confidence.

“I really hope that this experience will inspire them to become more involved in their own communities,” Benavides said, “and will give them greater empathy toward those who may not have the same advantages and chances that they do.”

There is also no refusing the profit to the kids.

“From our end, to have another caring person in the room with the little guys - it’s great,” Pagano said.

Taylor tried out an optional service-learning activity for his Spanish students in the spring 2007 term. This semester he made it a requirement, with assistance from the director of service learning at LeMoyne and Theresa Pagano, founder and director of MANOS and the East Side Learning Center. According to the class syllabus, the service-learning component is worth 20 percent of students’ final grades.

Besides spending time at MANOS, the students could choose to be paired up with Spanish-speaking adults from the East Side Learning Center.

“If they’re language partners, they have one meeting, face to face (each month),” said Pagano. Then, they keep in touch through e-mails.

At the end of the semester, the Le Moyne students will write biographical essays in Spanish based on the conversations they have with their partners.

Top Homeschooling Advice: Scheduling & Planning Lessons

1. Understand the sat writing prompts first

Before you write one word, you must know exactly what you need to be writing about. The biggest mistake you can make is to start writing before you’ve fully thought through the prompt. I’ve seen many students write an essay that hardly relates to the prompt because they were so eager to get started that they missed an important point in the prompt. Don’t be one of them.

2. Use an analogy or metaphor to answer your sat writing prompts

Analogies are creative. And good analogies can impress graders because they like to reward good thinking. Here’s an analogy a one student created to answer the prompt “Does it always take hard work to make progress?”
“To climb a mountain a person must struggle and strain. And this is the case with any worthwhile goal…”

3. Tell a brief anecdote

Create an engaging introducty by telling a brief anecdote in just a few sentences like in the example below:
When I trained for my first marathon it was difficult and often painful. But I wanted to have the accomplishment of running 26.2 miles so I did it anyway. To make progress in life requires sacrifice.

4. Use a quote that was not used in the prompt

Tip O’Neil, former Speaker of the House of Representatives said that one key to his success in politics was the fact that he memorized great lines of poetry and famous quotes to use when he had to do impromptu speeches.

The same strategy can help you when you take the SAT. Memorize a few quotes that you really like and use them if they fit your topic on test day.
For example for the essay topic “Do mistakes lead to growth?” one of my students wrote
Someone once asked Edison, “how can you feel good about your work, having failed nine-hundred and ninety-nine times to make a light bulb?” To this Edison replied, “I have not failed so many times, I have merely learned nine-hundred and ninety-nine ways not to make a light bulb.” Why did Edison react this way? Because he knew that mistakes are always experiences that lead to learning and growth.
This was a great quote to begin his essay with and would definitely impress SAT Essay graders.

5. Mention a topic in the news

Most educated people are aware of most important stories in the news and it’s good for you to be aware of important events when studying for the SATs. However, when you use a news story it’s important to make sure that it’s not something about Britney Spears or some entertainment related topic. Make sure it’s about something more substantial like the atrocities in Darfour. And stay away from political issues like abortion as you can never be sure of the political views of the people grading your sat essay.

6. Make up an anecdote using very specific details

I had a student that loved to use this technique even though he wasn’t very good at it… at first. Eventually he got good at making up stories that were so specific, that he even fooled me a few times and I knew he was trying to make things up. I personally don’t recommend this strategy because it’s not good preparation for college. Trust me, if you make something up in your Biology course your professor will know it.

7. Use a cliche in an inventive way

Professional writers, academics, journalists and pretty much anyone who knows anyone who judges writing says to avoid cliché’s. However, I disagree because these same people use clichés to spice up their writing. But what they do is change the cliché so that it becomes more original.

One student used the following cliche to make a great introduction for the topic “Which is a better indicator of a person’s true character, their actions or their words?”

“A picture tells a thousand words” is a saying that applies to the newspaper industry but which also applies to people. The picture created by a person’s actions tells us a thousand words about him or her and goes much farther than words do in telling us about a person’s true thoughts and feelings. Several examples from literature and history demonstrate this point.

Using this cliché that “a picture tells a thousand words” to prove the point of another cliché that “actions speak louder than words” is pretty original and added a lot of power to his essay.

8. When all else fails just do a quick summary of what you will cover in your essay

After reading the prompt, you should brainstorm several ideas you can use in your essay. Once you’ve done that you can include a list of the kinds of examples you will use.

For example, “Examples from history, literature and science will prove that people care far too much about what others think of them.”

Most of all remember, you do not need to write an impressive introduction so badly that you sacrifice the rest of your essay. In fact I taught my students to write great body paragraphs first as these are just as important. Then when they could write them quickly I taught them how to write great introductions and powerful conclusions.

Though a student does not count paragraphs or pages, the longer the sat writing test is, the better, because this clearly shows that the writer has substantial evidence and examples to back up the opinion being presented. The first critical step is to organize a response in a logical order, starting with a leading or introductory paragraph that catches the SAT grader’s attention, quickly summarizes in a single sentence the theme of the essay and with a maximum of two or three more sentences, establishes the basic opinion regarding the original SAT essay questions. The second step is to use priority organization for the body of the essay, using the most important opinion response first, followed by the second and so on. The third step is use at least a few paragraphs to break down each response in turn (starting with the first), going from the most important points to be made about that response and then repeating this process for the other responses in order as they were originally presented. The fourth step is to ensure that the essay is articulate, using as many SAT words as possible, similar to what a writer would do when they use keywords for a web-based article, as this helps to show that the essay writer has some intelligence. The fourth important step is to ensure that within each response discussed that at least one or more scholarly, historical or literary examples are given, totalling at least three within the entire SAT essay. The fifth and final step is to summarize the entire essay by using the original introductory paragraph as a guideline for the order of the conclusions and to summarize each response in order with at least one sentence, but making the final sentence give a summarized conclusion about the original SAT essay question.

By using careful mental planning, it is possible to use these five steps to achieve top level SAT graded scores for an SAT essay.
